x314.......Then that have the rule--submit--or imitate?

17* Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves:..... (Hebrews 13:17A)

this half a verse in the Bible seems to say to us that there is someone in the church who "has the rule. And what we are to do with that person is to be submissive to the will of that person--that we ought to obey their commands and orders submissively.

We certainly should not try to imitate them--right? After all they are the "delegated authority"--we should never aspire to do what they do--right?

Oops--read a few verse before this one--

7* Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. (Hebrews 13:7)

Oops--this verse previously has said that these same "them which have the rule over you" should be imitated!

"Conversation" is lifestlye or conduct--this verse says we ought to observe carefully the way they live their lives--we ought to do what they do.

Well how can this be--we can't all be rulers in the church--right?!

Well this mistake is because we have not defined "rule" the way that Jesus did. The Greek word translated as "have the rule over" is the word "hegeomai". this same exact word is defined by Jesus (although translated in English here as "chief")--

25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. (Luke 22:25-26, KJV).

Now we get the whole picture. When we accept Jesus' definition of hegeomai we understand that "them that have the rule over you"--are supposed to be people who serve If we were bold enough to read the rest of Hebrews 13:17 we would see it is speaking of those who serve you the word of God (give account).

Now we get the real picture--we should imitate (Hebrews 13 :7)--those who serve us the word--those who minister to us the word.

These verses in reality verify what the Bible says in many other places--we should all minister the word. We should all function in our anointing and gift--we should all serve God and serve others.

The ministry of the new covenant Bible was for all (sons and daughters shall prophecy)--on a common level--as brothers and sisters--Christ the one and only Head.
