x25........The full discernment of Jesus.
1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country
of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
(Mark 5:1-20, KJV).
this story is so amazing and shows us the fullness of the discernment of Jesus and gives us the perfect example of what we as Christians ought to be striving for in our walk.
this demoniac was certainly a wicked sort of fellow. It was obvious to everyone that he was demon possessed!
Unfortunately, most of us stop at this level of discernment--we see the devil--congratulate ourselves for "having the discernment" and run the other way--But this is not what Jesus does--
He understand the fullness of discernment. the Holy Ghost inside of us will tell us when and where the devil is--but a fuller discernment of the situation is to understand the authority that God has given us over the devil and any amount of demons. Jesus is not afraid--But then He goes the next step
He does not fight the devil!
Most of us, if we confront the devil will bolster ourselves up and put up a big fight. Again we don't understand the fullness of the authority we have in the Holy Ghost with the power of God in us. Jesus sees the devil surely in the man--but He also sees the person inside --and loves the man.
If we understood our authority more fully-we would understand that when we love the person inside who is begin attacked by the devil--they will lay at our feet and love us--and this will defeat the devil! The demoniac "lays at Jesus" feet--simply because Jesus understands the situation--sees the devil--yet loves the person more than He hates the devil--What an important lesson for us to know and follow!
But lets look at the further discernment of Jesus.
The man, once set free of the devil, wants to follow after Jesus--he wants to become a disciple- a student of the Lord. Jesus goes the final step in discernment--He sees the ministry gift inside the man. He understands that this man--even though he was overrun with devils--is a minister of the word of God inside--and in fact is someone who does not even need the discipleship of Jesus to become of preacher!!
Jesus sends Him off (sends=apostle) and the man who was the demoniac, becomes a greater minister than the apostles that Jesus was teaching! he goes to "Decopolis" which means "ten cities" and preaches the God News!
So we see in this example the fullness of the discernment that the Lord is demonstrating for us--and the same discernment we ought to have also if Jesus is truly our example
1. Discern the devil but don't run away or fight--
2. Love the person inside--the devil will surely flee, and the person will now be permanently set free.
3. Discern the ministry that the person has. This will keep the devil away forever because the person will be happily serving the Lord in their life. If we are busy serving God--what room could the devil have in our lives?
